First molecular evidence of Orf virus in Cuba

Abstract

Contagious ecthyma (CE) is a highly contagious and debilitating infectious disease of the skin and mucous membranes mainly affecting sheep and goats worldwide. The etiological agent of this disease is Orf virus (ORFV). The present study described the first molecular evidence of ORFV infecting two goats belonging to a unit in Mayabeque province in Cuba. The clinical diagnosis of the disease was carried out and the presence of the virus was confirmed by end-point PCR. This study allowed the molecular identification of ORFV for the first time in Cuba and established the basis for the molecular characterization of the virus identified.
