Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the predominance between Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) and Acanthoscelides obtectus Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on common beans in field and storage conditions. Two experiments were carried out: one with samples from warehouses where there were beans infested by weevils and the second with pods of three bean cultivars taken in the field every seven days for 28 days, starting from the physiological maturity. The samples were taken to the laboratory and kept under controlled temperature, humidity, and luminosity, in a completely randomized design. Frequency analyses were performed to find out the predominant species, and the average density of insects were compared by analysis of variance with Tukey's test (p≤0.05) The frequency analysis indicated the presence of both species in storage conditions, but Z. subfasciatus predominated with 94.73 %, in addition to showing greater infestation. Under field conditions, the presence of Z. subfasciatus was not detected. The presence of A. obtectus under field conditions was low and apparently linked to the degree of maturity of the different bean cultivars.
