Abstract

The commercial cultivation of pineapple has increased in Colombia in the last years with a high export potential of the MD2 hybrid. With the objective of stablishing a base line of the heart and root rots in MD2 pineapple orchards of two agroclimatic zones of the department of Valle del Cauca, 13 exploratory visits were conducted to 46 orchards and 77 plots in six municipalities. The observation process and the recorded symptoms associated with heart and root rots allowed us to determine progression of their symptoms. The prevalence of the disease in the zones of study was 24,7 %, which corresponded to 19 infected plots mainly in vegetative phase with medium and low levels of occurrence. Regarding the agroclimatic zones in study, the upper land zone, with a prevalence of 22,1 %, was the most affected, while the prevalence in the lower land zone was 2,6 %, which could be associated with the implemented phytosanitary management. Three qualitative agronomic variables were associated with the presence of the disease: 1) the fructification phase, 2) the aggregated distribution of the disease, and 3) the number of production cycles in the studied plots. The results of this study showed a high prevalence of heart and root rots in the upper zone and suggested a possible association between symptoms observed in the studied MD2 pineapple orchards and pineapple heart rot disease (PHRD), but this must be confirmed with complementary studies.
