Abstract

Adults and juveniles of Acanthoderesfuneraria(Bates) were observed on two types of Agave salmiana(Ottoex Salm-Dyck) in the municipality of Tecozautla, state of Hidalgo, Mexico, to study the habitat preference and behavior of both of the beetle phases; for this aim, the numberofindividuals were quantified, and thecharacteristics related to their diet and development were observed. A randomizedblock design with three replications was set up. The data were processed by Student's t-test.The presence of adults corresponded to the beginning of the rainy season. During 57 days, 78 specimens were recorded on Agave Blanco cenizo, with an average of 1.73 individuals per plant, while only six individuals (an average of 0.13 individuals per plant) were recorded on Agave Sha'mini, a significant difference (p <0.01). The beetle larval stage was recorded in the root zone of 77.7%of the plants Blanco cenizo and only in 11.1% of the Sha'mini plants, a highly significant difference (p <0.01). On the first type of Agave, the number of larvae per plant varied from 1 to 3, and a total of 32 larvae were observed on 18 plants (1.77 individuals perplant). The insects, upon feeding, caused lesions on the surface of the leaf upper side, leaving a characteristic signal that changed from whitish green to brown, in most cases perpendicular to the axis of the leaf; anevident damage was observed at the base of the leaves near the root zone.
