Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the parasitic nematodes found on habanero chili pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) plants growing in areas of Cienfuegos province, Cuba, with weakness and wilting symptoms and root galling. Soil samples were examined by Baermann and blender + sieving methods, and sub-samples of roots were dissected under a stereomicroscope in search of the presence of Meloidogyne spp. The nematode populations were expressed on 100 g basis. The plant roots showed deterioration and the presence of rounded galls (3 - 7 mm in diameter) with no nematodes inside of them. Most of the galls were in chains and grouped, covering a large part of the root system, some of them with necrotic tissue. In some plants, the galls were present on the thinnest roots, with small and protruding egg masses where adult female of root-knot nematodes were found. Populations of Helicotylenchus dihystera (Cobb) Sher, Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White) Chitwood, and Xiphinema basiri Siddiqi were found, the latter specie with populations of 100 - 450 specimens/100 g of soil. Galls with no nematode inside were produced by X. basiri, representing the first report of the presence of this nematode affecting habanero chili pepper in Cuba.
